Harper plan for judges draws fire

Canada is edging towards a U.S.-style justice system by subjecting Supreme Court candidates to a public grilling that could invade personal privacy and taint judicial independence, critics say.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper yesterday announced a new process to vet nominees to the top bench — a 12-member committee of MPs from all political camps who will question and provide feedback on his chosen candidate but won’t have the power to veto his pick.
But the Canadian Bar Association ripped the Conservative plan as an invitation to “partisan criticism” and unwarranted probing of a candidate’s personal views.
NDP justice critic Joe Comartin agreed it will lead to the “circus-style” grilling observed in the U.S.
