Livius is a non-commercial website on ancient history. Since 1996, it has been maintained by Jona Lendering from Amsterdam, Holland. He read history at Leiden University (where he graduated in 1993), specialized in Mediterranean culture at the Amsterdam Free University (until 1996), and worked at excavations in Holland (a Roman villa) and Greece (hellenistic Halos). After teaching methodology and theory at the Free University, he worked for some time as an archivist for the Dutch government. He is currently teaching ancient and Dutch history at the Free University.

The art gallery business is first of all a business, art is to the art dealer as groceries are to the grocer. Art is the product sold and the dealers goal is to make a profit. The dealers job is to manipulate the media, curators and collectors to achieve that goal. The greater the skill at this manipulation, the greater the ability to make a profit. An artists life is the antithesis of this. The artists life is about self expression, beauty, psychological exploration, the enhancement of the human experience. To live as an artist requires self sacrifice, thus the being of the artist is in conflict with the dealers materialist, profit seeking mentality. This is important to bear in mind.
Some of the best-loved ad images of the 20th century have names like Tony, Betty and Ronald. Others, like the Marlboro Man, may not be as beloved, but grew to have tremendous worldwide impact as an instant identifier of Philip Morris Co.'s Marlboro cigarettes.
From frozen vegetables to packaged cake mix, from fast food to automobile tires, these carefully drawn characters are the personifications of businesses that began small but grew to become dominant brands in their fields -- thanks in large part to their famous icons.
(Interesting to note that the Michelin Man originally held a glass of beer: "...lifting a beer glass and shouting, 'Nunc est bibendum! (Now is the time to drink!)' seemed to embody Michelin's slogan at the time, 'Michelin tires swallow up all obstacles.'")
